To help mark the countdown to the London 2012 Olympic Games, a
fun doubles tennis tournament is being held on Sunday, August 24 in
Felixstowe at one of the district’s training facilities that are
set to be used by overseas competitors.
Felixstowe Lawn Tennis Club will on behalf of the district also
fly the London Olympics 2012 flag which is being hoisted across the
country in celebration of the return of the world’s leading
sporting event returning to these shores.
“Every council is being asked to fly the flag for the London
Olympics after the official ending of the Beijing 2008 Games, and
we thought what better way to do it than link it in with one of our
leading sporting facilities and give people the chance to have a
game,” said Cllr Mary Neale, Cabinet Member for Leisure and
Countryside.
“I would like to thank Felixstowe Lawn Tennis Club not just for
agreeing to hoist the flag, but also for opening up all 21 courts
from 10am to 2pm for a fun doubles tournament, when anyone can come
along and take part. I hope that in four years time we will be able
to see local sports people proudly taking their place representing
this country at the London Games,” added Cllr Neale.
The tennis club at Bath Road is one of four local training
facilities for the 2012 games, with Bentwaters being on offer for
cyclists, Otley College for equestrian teams, and the Ipswich Town
training facilities at Bent Lane also available.
Anyone wanting to take part in the fun doubles tennis tournament
can just turn up on the day or contact the club in advance on 01394
282940. There will also be tennis coaching on offer for those who
need help to improve any aspect of their game. The day is open to
members and non-members, and as long as you are appropriately
dressed you do not even need to bring a tennis
racquet.
