As the weather heats up and World Cup parties get underway
residents are encouraged to freshen up their barbecue skills and
consider their neighbours this summer so everyone can enjoy the
warmer weather safely.
Now that summer is here people are heading outdoors to the
garden and dusting off their barbecues to make the most of the
sunny season.
“Barbecues are a popular way to enjoy the British summer and
longer evenings socialising with family and friends. Hopefully
there will be cause for celebration this summer and nobody wants to
see that dampened by food illnesses that could easily have been
avoided by correct food preparation and thorough cooking,” said
Cllr Sherrie Green, Cabinet Member for Community Health.
Thanks to the food safety teams’ tips on good barbecue food
hygiene there should be fewer cases of illness due to food not
being cooked or stored properly.
“The food safety awareness events held at Notcutts and Wyevale
garden centres earlier this month helped residents brush up on
their barbecue safety knowledge and complete a fun quiz. The winner
of the quiz has now been chosen and received a fantastic prize
kindly donated by Notcutts Garden Centre in Woodbridge.
“Residents were reminded to make sure food was cooked all the
way through with all the juices running clear, that food was cooked
evenly by turning it and moving it around the barbecue and to store
cooked and uncooked food, especially meat, separately.
“We would encourage residents to seriously think about good food
hygiene while enjoying themselves responsibly, as drinking one too
many can mean that we do not always give enough care and attention
to cooking and preparing food,” added Cllr Green.
Remembering that fellow neighbours may also be out enjoying
themselves residents can keep cool and avoid any disturbances that
may be caused by neighbourly disputes or misunderstandings.
“Bearing in mind that neighbours are likely to have windows and
patio doors open too or are also likely to be outside enjoying
their gardens residents can ensure that everyone enjoys relaxing
and socialising this summer.
“Now that the World Cup celebrations are under way there are
likely to be a number of people getting together to watch the
games. Late night parties, loud music or offensive language and
shouting can be upsetting to people so we would encourage residents
to keep any behaviour that could be viewed as offensive to a
minimum enjoying themselves in moderation.
“We don’t want to stop people from having fun and enjoying
themselves but we would encourage them to remember that noise can
travel a surprisingly long way and can be irritating to those
living near by relaxing in their own gardens or trying to sleep,”
added Cllr Green.
Neighbours may appreciate being told in advance that you are
planning a get-together and are likely to be far more understanding
if you let them know what time it is likely to
finish.
