Energy advice helps local businesses save tonnes

17 Jan 2011

Archived press release .

With the help of the Suffolk Coastal Business Energy Advisor local businesses are reaping the benefits of reduced energy costs and downsizing their carbon footprints.

Local company Recassa Financial Solutions Ltd based in Martlesham is set to save £1,200 in electricity costs alone thanks to the Suffolk Coastal business energy advisor identifying that they could find a cheaper electricity charge.

“The business energy advisor is on hand to carry out energy audits for local companies to help enable them to address areas that can help to save them money and make the running of their business greener,” said Cllr Andrew Nunn, Cabinet Member for the Green Environment.

As well as identifying a cheaper electricity charge the business energy advisor was also able to provide a thorough overhaul of the business premises and provide a detailed suggested action plan for the business.

The action plan included over £2,700 worth of savings that Recassa Financial Solutions could potentially make. By insulating the office roof a possible saving of at least £167 per year could be made. By replacing lighting with energy efficient bulbs up to £100 could be saved and by reviewing and upgrading the heating systems savings of a further £1,000 a year could be made.

Taking part in a business energy advisor audit can identify several hundred pounds worth of savings for local businesses, but it not only identifies one-off savings but those that will continue to save money and reduce carbon production in the future. So far, the business energy advisor has helped local businesses identify average savings of £5,253 in energy costs and 22.28 tonnes of carbon across the district.

“Although getting in touch with the business advisor service makes good money sense it also makes good business sense too as customers and clients are increasingly aware of using greener, environmentally responsible suppliers and are taking this into account when looking for products or services,” added Cllr Nunn.

Once an action plan has been drawn up there is follow up support and advice available from the advisors over the phone as well as a follow up visit to check how they are getting on with implementing the suggested action plans.

“The help on hand from the business advisory service is particularly helpful as most businesses do not have specific environmental management roles in their organisations. The vast majority of businesses in Suffolk Coastal are quite small so this is particularly beneficial for them and I would encourage businesses to arrange an appointment if they are keen to find out more about improving their green credentials and reducing energy costs,” added Cllr Nunn.
