Walberswick waiting for candidates to stand up and be counted

11 Jan 2012

Nobody came forward as candidates by last Friday’s closing date for the two vacant seats on Walberswick Parish Council so another attempt will be launched next month to attract new councillors.

The official notice asking people to come forward as candidates will be advertised within 10 days following what was the planned election day, Thursday February 2. The seats were vacated by Mandy Aldridge and Nick Crocker.

The seven seats on the parish council were last contested in May 2011, and those filling the vacancies are due to remain councillors until May 2015.

As well as being aged at least 18 and either a British, Commonwealth or European Union citizen, potential candidates must have for the whole 12 months prior to the election, occupied (as owner or tenant) land or other premises in the parish, or had their principal or only place of work during that same 12 months period in the parish, or during the whole of that same 12 month period resided in the parish or within three miles of it.

People wanting to stand for a town or parish councils need to complete nomination papers that have been signed by two electors, a proposer and a seconder, who are registered to vote in Walberswick.
