A new tourist attraction is preparing for a busy summer season
allowing residents and visitors to try a new way of getting
around.
Suffolk Coastal have agreed a license with Suffolk Segways
Limited for Segways to be based at the former go-kart racing track
situated along Felixstowe’s south seafront next to the Leisure
Centre car park. They will be available starting from the Bank
Holiday weekend and will continue throughout the summer.
“The Segway is an exciting and innovative piece of technology
providing a great opportunity to master a new skill. Riders will be
impressed with the unique design and the ease of use,” said Andy
Wright, Head of Community and Economic Services.
A Segway is a two-wheeled, self-balancing electric powered
vehicle that moves at a low speed by leaning your body in the
direction you wish to travel. It is easy to use and suitable for
most ages and abilities.
“Felixstowe seafront will be one of only a handful of locations
across the country offering Segways so it will hopefully be a big
draw for visitors coming to the resort and wanting to try something
a little bit different,” added Mr Wright.
Segways are not permitted on public roads in the UK so the
existing track is a perfect location for riders to really test them
out. It will give them the opportunity to get a feel of them and
when they leave carry the Segway Smile with them. Safety equipment
is provided to all riders and a briefing given on how to safely
operate the vehicles.
Because Segways are electric devices they are almost soundless
and are a much greener form of transport compared to other small
powered vehicles. There is no noise disturbance and they can be
used for long periods of time without needing to be re-fuelled or
charged and do not emit harmful gases.
“Felixstowe has a wide range of attractions suitable for all the
family and the newest addition is likely to be very popular with
both residents and visitors returning to the resort time and time
again. As well as the traditional seaside pastimes of donkey rides
and ice creams we are also keen to encourage new attractions that
will be equally enjoyable for visitors.
“The Bank Holiday weekend also celebrates the launch of the
Martello Coast Path on Monday, May 3 with a number of different
activities taking place along the whole length of the path. Located
alongside the path I am sure there will be many intrigued passers
by wanting to give it a go,” added Mr Wright.
