Around 2,000 people enjoyed the Xtremefest experience on Sunday
(July 27) when Felixstowe’s Brackenbury Fort hosted the one-day
free event promoting and celebrating alternative sports, beach
activities and healthy living.
Thanks to sponsorship by SkiSurf, Suffolk Coastal’s active
communities team were able to pull together an exciting range of
activities and attractions that kept everyone happy.
“It really was an amazing event, with so many varied and
interesting things going on, and I would like to thank Suffolk
Coastal’s Sarah Shinnie, her team, SkiSurf and everyone else who
made it such a great day for everyone,” said Cllr Doreen Savage,
Cabinet Member for Young People.
“I would also like to publicly thank Bob Spalding Marine and
Leisure of Levington who stepped in on Friday to supply stand-by
rescue boats for the water based activities, filling the gap left
after the original boats had their engines stolen.
“A sign of how well the event was organised was the comments I
received from those living close by who all seemed very positive
about the day and joined in with many of the activities. It was
great to hear people say that we need more events like Xtremefest
in Felixstowe, and that the Brackenbury Fort/Green should be used
more often,” added Cllr Savage.
Among the attractions were a skateboard half-pipe competition
sponsored by EdgeRiders, a display from the MAD mountain bike team,
a synthetic ice rink, a climbing wall, Laser Quest, Human
Gyroscope, a rodeo surfboard, a bungee run and a music stage with
live local young bands and DJs from the Soundwaves project.
Riding the real waves were Alton Water Sports Centre who
provided sailing for the spectators, while there was refreshments
and stalls with a mix of spectator sports and ‘try it’
sessions.
Xtremefest was sponsored by SkiSurf and organised by Suffolk
Coastal in partnership with UK Windsurfing Association, RYA
Onboard, Keith Atkinson (British Windsurfing Champion), Alton Water
Sports Centre and Felixstowe TV.
