The National Non-Domestic Rate, NNDR or Business Rates as
they are more often known, were introduced in 1990 to replace
locally set general rates.
Although Suffolk Coastal issues the bill and collects your
Business Rates, the total amount collected across the country goes
into a central rate pool for England. This is managed by the
Government's Department for Communities and Local Government, which
redistributes the funds to local authorities (as part of the annual
formula grant settlement) and other bodies like police and
fire authorities.
The money, together with revenue from Council Tax payers, other
specific Government grants and certain other sums, is used to pay
for the services that local authorities and these other bodies
provide. All businesses benefit from these services - some services
are of direct benefit, for instance roads, the police and the fire
service. Others, such as education and housing, are of indirect but
nevertheless real benefit.
You can find out how Suffolk Coastal District Council, Suffolk
County Council and Suffolk Police Authority spend their budgets to
provide the services that your Business Rates help contribute to in
the
Council Tax and financial information booklet
(new window PDF 854KB).
A
Business Rates information leaflet (new window
PDF 27KB) is sent out with annual rate demands and to all
subsequent new occupiers of non-domestic property in the Suffolk
Coastal area (the wording of the leaflet is prescribed by the
Government).
