Safer Food Better Business for retailers

Cover of the Safer food, better business retail packFood hygiene legislation requires retailers to have a documented food safety management system - it doesn't have to be Safer Food Better Business (SFBB) but any alternative may involve a lot of work for you if you do not already have such a system in place.

The SFBB pack for retailers is designed for small retailers such as convenience stores, newsagents and health food shops, who sell pre-packed food, where the cold chain must be maintained. It includes a cooking and preparation section that covers specific activities that are commonly undertaken in small retail shops such as 'baking off' bought in products and preparing ready to eat. It is not designed for specialist retailers such as butchers, bakers or fishmongers.

You can download the SFBB pack for retailers (new window) and a guide explaining how to use it from the Food Standards Agency (FSA) website. If you would like to order a paper copy of the pack call FSA Publications on 0845 606 0667 or email foodstandards@ecgroup.co.uk.

The SFBB retail pack is designed to be easy to use and can easily be made to fit your business. Each SFBB pack is split into five sections containing a number of fact sheets called ‘safe methods’. Typical safe methods include instructions on cooking food safely and reheating.

Decide which safe methods apply to your business, and then follow them. There are about twenty safe methods in total but not all of them will apply to all businesses.

A simple diary is also provided, for appropriate record keeping. This also includes a four-weekly review to ensure that the document remains up-to-date and to allow common problems to be identified and addressed.

Diary refills available

Diary refills can be downloaded or printed off (new window) from the FSA website. You can also order diary refills from FSA publications (contact details above). You should store all your completed diary pages safely until your next visit from a member of the Food and Safety Team. He or she may want to look at your diary pages. During the visit, check how long he or she wants you to keep your diary pages.

Free SFBB DVD

A free SFBB interactive DVD is also available to help you use your pack and train your staff on SFBB. It has voiceovers in 16 languages: Arabic, Bengali, Cantonese, English, Kurdish, Mandarin, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Romanian, Tamil, Thai, Turkish, Urdu, Vietnamese and Welsh.

If you would like to order a copy of the DVD, call FSA Publications on 0845 606 0667 or email foodstandards@ecgroup.co.uk.

Where can I get more information about the regulations?

You can visit the Food Standards Agency website (new window) or contact the Food and Safety Team on 01394 444357 or email foodsafetyteam@suffolkcoastal.gov.uk
