If you are considering opening a new food business in the
Suffolk Coastal district it is important that you contact our Food
and Safety team. This is because the law requires that all food
businesses, and other premises where food is handled or stored, are
registered with the local authority.
The Food and Safety team will also be able to help you to
understand the physical and practical requirements that have to be
met when running a food business
and food hygiene legislation. It is better to get it
right before you open than to have to make expensive changes
afterwards.
You can contact the Food and Safety team on 01394
444357 or email
foodsafetyteam@suffolkcoastal.gov.uk.
Registering as a food business operator is free of charge. You
will need to print out and complete the registration form below,
sign and to return it to the Food and Safety team.
Information about starting up a food business is
also available on the Food Standards Agency (new window) and
the Business Link (new window) websites.
Advice for childcarers and childminders
The Food Standards Agency has issued
advice for childcarers, such as childminders
who may be providing food to those in their care. They have also
produced a Safer Food Better Business (SFBB) pack especially
aimed at registered
childminders who are providing a regular food
service.
Food Standards Agency publications
The Food Standards Agency produces a wide range of publications
for food businesses. Many of these are available free of charge
from Food Standards Agency Publications on 0845 606
0667 or can be downloaded from
the Food Standards Agency website (new window). Two
booklets that will be of interest to new food businesses are
featured below:
Starting up - your first steps to running a catering
business
This booklet is aimed at people who are setting up a restaurant,
café, or other catering business, whether they are taking over a
business that already exists, or starting a new one. It includes
details on registering food premises, licences that may be
required, and regulations on premises, equipment, staff, transport
and other areas. The content has been updated to reflect changes in
food hygiene regulations.
Food Hygiene - a guide for businesses
This booklet is for restaurants, cafés and other catering
businesses, as well as shops selling food. It tells you about
the key laws that affect your business, what they require you to do
and how they are enforced. The booklet also explains about
good food hygiene practice, which is essential for you to sell food
that is safe to eat - to protect your business and obey the
law.
