Trade waste - your duty of care

If you operate a business, special rules apply to your refuse arrangements:

  • You must only dispose of your waste to a registered waste carrier or licensed waste disposer.

  • You must obtain, and keep for two years, duty of care transfer notes for disposal of your waste.

  • Your duty of care documents must be made available for inspection by authorised officers.

  • It is illegal for you to dispose of your waste as household waste.

If you are using a waste carrier to remove your trade waste you can check they are registered waste carriers by calling the Environment Agency on 08708 506506 and requesting an instant waste carrier validation check.
