The annual Suffolk Village of the Year competition is
organised by the Suffolk Association of Local Councils (new
window) in partnership with the county and district
councils.
The 2011 competition was open to villages with up to 500 people
on their electoral roll.
Winners of the district rounds went on to
compete for the title of Suffolk Village of the Year. The
winners of the 2011 final were:
1st - Tattingstone
2nd - Coddenham
3rd - Great Livermere
The 2011 competition was sponsored by BT, IP-City Network,
Adnams Brewery, BBC Radio Suffolk and the East Anglian Daily
Times.
Suffolk Coastal Village of the Year 2011 - Boyton
Boyton was judged Suffolk Coastal Village of the Year 2011, with
its efforts to go green helping it win the prestigious crown, and
went on to take the Suffolk Wildlife Natural Environment prize in
the county-wide Suffolk Village of the Year competition.
The judging panel were impressed with what Boyton were able to
achieve despite being a small village of only 50 homes.
The village has organised a bulk buying scheme for heating oil,
a vegetable exchange scheme and have been working hard to set up a
new community group.
Boyton received the winning prize of £200 and an engraved cup to
display. Easton received £125 for coming second and third place,
Westleton, received £75.
The judging panel was made up of Councillor Joan Sennington,
Councillor Veronica Falconer and Councillor Marian Andrews.
The competition is judged on criteria covering community spirit,
the parish council, the natural environment, general appearance of
the village and any special activities that impress the
judges.
Past successes in Suffolk Coastal
In 2010 Wickham Market won the Suffolk Coastal round of
competition when the competition was open to villages with between
501 and 3,000 residents. Second place went to Yoxford and
third place to Orford. Wickham Market went on to compete against
the winners from the other districts in Suffolk and came third in
the county final.
In 2009 the competition was open to villages with up
to 500 people on their electoral roll and was won by Easton,
with Brandeston and Friston equal second, and Westerfield
third.
In 2008 Orford won the Suffolk Coastal Village of the Year award
and Wickham Market came second.
In 2007, Levington won the Suffolk Coastal round and eventually
scooped the national
Calor Village of the Year title in 2008 (new
