Promoting the welfare of children and young people
The Children Act 2004 places responsibility on district councils
to make arrangements to safeguard and promote the welfare of
children.
We have to ensure the following:
- Our senior managers are committed to the importance of
safeguarding and promoting wellbeing (we also have two very
proactive council member champions, who sit on the Services for All
group which oversees the safeguarding).
- We have a clear statement of our responsibilities towards
children that all staff are aware of.
- That there are clear lines of responsibility.
- We have 'safe' recruitment practices for recruiting anyone to a
post where the postholder will come into contact with children and
young people (specialist training is provided for managers to
ensure that when we recruit to these posts, every check is made to
guarantee as far as possible that we recruit the best person for
the role).
- We provide training for all appropriate staff who come into
contact, either directly or indirectly, with children and/or young
people.
- We share information and ensure effective working relationships
with other agencies.
- Any organisations that we work with also follow the same
rigorous procedures and guidelines (there are links to our policy
and its requirements in all partnership agreements and contract
documents which partners and contractors have to sign up
to).
