The Suffolk Integrated Coastal Zone Management Initiative (ICZMI),
or Suffolk Coast Futures for short, is developing a
new approach to managing the future of the coastal zone.
The ICZMI is the overarching ‘glue’ that brings together some
other important plans and strategies:
Shoreline Management Plans
Shoreline Management Plans (SMPs) are large-scale assessments of
the risks associated with coastal processes which seek to reduce
these risks to people and the developed, historic and natural
environments. SMPs determine the natural forces which are shaping
the shoreline to assess how it is likely to change over the next
100 years, taking account of the condition of existing defences.
SMPs develop policies outlining how the shoreline should be managed
in the future, balancing the scale of the risks with the social,
environmental and financial costs involved, and avoiding adverse
impacts on adjacent coastal areas.
Suffolk Estuary Strategies
Led by the Environment Agency, the Suffolk Estuary Strategies
set out the aims and approaches to flood and erosion risk
management, taking into account a broad range of local interests
and issues.
Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB Management Plan
A five year management plan for the Suffolk Coast and Heaths
AONB was published in June 2008. This plan contains details of the
work to be carried out during the period 2008-13 to care for the
AONB.
Suffolk Coastal and Waveney Local Development Frameworks
Led by Suffolk Coastal and Waveney district councils, Local
Development Frameworks (LDFs) are a new type of plan which set out
the planning policies, proposals and actions for the future
development of the Suffolk Coastal and Waveney districts and will
replace the existing Local Plans.
Community Strategies
Community Strategies are interlinked plans drawn up by
Local Strategic Partnerships (LSPs) which set out the
overall strategic direction and long-term vision for the economic,
social and environmental well-being for and area and its
communities.
