The scheme will safeguard nearly 1,500 homes from the affects of coastal erosion, as well as local businesses, tourist beaches, recreational gardens and key facilities. The overall cost of the scheme is £10 million which is being funded by a grant from the Environment Agency.

The scheme is scheduled to be constructed in two phases from August 2011 to January 2012 and from April to July 2012.

Phase 1 of the scheme, which is currently underway, comprises of the construction of the all the rock groynes between the War Memorial and Cobbold's point, the recharge of the beach between the Spa Gardens and Cobbold’s Point and the temporary improvement of the existing revetment around the southern section of Cobbold’s Point to provide additional protection during the 2011/2012 winter.

Phase 2 comprises of the rock revetment and walkway/maintenance access around Cobbold’s Point.

Phase 1 construction works

During the phase 1 construction works, the beach and the promenade are closed to the public from Cobbold’s Point to the War Memorial. The promenade needs to be closed on health and safety grounds and to provide access for the contractor. In addition, Undercliff Road East between Brook Lane and Maybush Lane is closed in order to provide an area for the contractor’s compound and site offices. The footpath along the northern side of the road remains open with the diversion route for vehicles being via Foxgrove Road, Thornley Road and Brook Lane.

All businesses remain open and pedestrian access is possible from Cobbold’s Point into the Spa Gardens via Undercliff Road and a fenced off area of the promenade in front of the ice cream kiosk and The Hut.
