Operation Camouflage logoOperation Camouflage

Operation Camouflage is a five-day activity camp for 60 young people aged 8 to 16 years living or attending school in Suffolk Coastal.

The camp takes place during the school summer holidays when anti-social behaviour and criminal damage are at their highest levels. It is held at the Rock Barracks army base near Woodbridge with permission and support from the 23 Engineer Regiment (Air Assault).

The 60 participants are placed into teams containing a mix of ages and backgrounds to encourage team-building, social skills and self-esteem.

Assault courseGiven the location, the camp has a strong military theme throughout - each participant is issued with a kit at the beginning of the week which includes t-shirts in their team camouflage, hat, towel, compass, camouflage paint and army water bottle. A team of soldiers based at Rock Barracks are assigned to the camp and help throughout the week.

Activities held during the week include climbing, archery, dance, shooting (water-pistols), skateboarding, graffiti, tri-golf, basketball, football, tag-rugby, dodgeball, bushcraft and a modified army assault course.

The young people also take part in sessions focusing on anti-social behaviour prevention, personal safety, alcohol and substance misuse.

The camp has received an overwhelming response and positive feedback from young people and their parents and all places have been filled for Operation Camouflage 2009.

'ASBO Wot Eva' leaflet

ASBO What Eva leaflet coverThe ideas and designs of five local youngsters have been used to create a special 'ASBO Wot Eva' leaflet aimed at young people.

When the Suffolk Coastal Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership wanted a leaflet to explain to young people what anti-social behaviour is, its consequences and how to report it, it decided that the best people to help get the message across were local youngsters and so a leaflet design competition was held.

The five winning designers were Gemma and Becky Oakes from Dennington, Eloise Vest from Martlesham, Ellen Wright and Terry Dean of Felixstowe.
