The David Lock
Felixstowe Seafront and Town Centre Master
Plan identified the need for a 'seafront leisure path',
described as 'enhancement of existing promenade allowing
unhindered passage from Landguard Point to Felixstowe Ferry for
pedestrians and cyclists'.
A project steering group was set up for the project now known as
the 'Martello Coast Path'. The first phase of the project involved
appointing an artist to research and design a series of proposals
for the path.
The artist appointed for the project was Lizzy-Jane Grose. She
looked at the route in great detail and designed a set of pictorial
discs entitled ‘Looking through Time’ that run along the route of
the path - these are a series of vibrant and fun images of
Felixstowe throughout history. It is a wonderful experience to walk
the route and spy these unique tributes to Felixstowe.
Another product of this project is a pictorial map designed
by the artist entitled ‘Walking the Guarded Land’. This is a
two-sided paper artwork which includes illustrations of locations
along the route and other features linked to Felixstowe. It is a
great guide to accompany the walk and can be purchased at
Felixstowe Tourist Information Centre for £1.50.
Lizzy-Jane Grose also produced an artist's book entitled 'See
Felixstowe with Me' as part of the project. It is based on an
inquisitive visitor’s view of the town and is a very charming and
insightful account. It is priced at £12.99 and is available at
several stockists in Felixstowe, including:
- Felixstowe Tourist Information Centre
- Felixstowe Museum
- Magpie Books
- Poor Richard’s Books
- The Reunion Gallery
- Treasure Chest Books
