Suffolk Coastal is committed to reducing its use of fossil fuels
and production of greenhouse gas emissions while reducing
expenditure.
Producing an annual greenhouse gas report in line with
Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) guidance is part of
our approach to tackling this issue and measuring progress. It
shows that we are monitoring our use of fuel and electricity and
attempting to reduce emissions.
Between 2008/9 and 2010/11 provisional data indicates that the
Council has reduced greenhouse gas emissions (quoted as carbon
dioxide equivalent) by 12%. The reductions are down to a range of
measures undertaken since signing the Nottingham Declaration on
Climate Change in 2007.
These include internal audits of our stock to identify
improvements, insulation of key properties, improving heating
plant, reducing heating and lighting times at key properties and
improving controls, identifying buildings which could be
demolished, improving fleet, management and route planning,
changing mileage payments to reduce the incentive to drive alone,
installing teleconferencing and video conferencing and engaging
staff in various activities to raise awareness of actions that can
be undertaken to reduce their carbon footprint.
The report does not require us to include financial impacts nor
does it cover all greenhouse gas emissions. Instead it focuses on
the direct emissions from key aspects: fleet, natural gas, oil and
electricity. You can see the full report by following the link
