Suffolk Coastal District Council's travel plan

On 3 November 2009, following a fleet review with the Energy Saving Trust and internal consultation, the Council adopted 'Getting There' - a green travel plan, which is another step towards reducing the Council’s carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and PM10 emissions and improving the efficiency of service delivery by reducing business mileage.

The key targets are:

  • A year on year 5% reduction in business mileage - as long as this does not have a negative affect on service delivery.

  • A reduction in the number of single occupancy car journeys to work.

Key actions:

  • Organise an official guaranteed lift home system for people car sharing or cycling.

  • Hold an annual event which covers green travel options.

  • Investigate the potential of using council owned buildings for satellite hot desking centres.

  • Investigate the potential of running an efficient pool car fleet.

  • Develop a business case for the provision of an additional shower and cycle storage facilities.

  • Increase the use of telephone conferencing by determining what current facilities are available and communicate to staff and look into hosting training on successful chairing.

  • Trial the provision of a pool unisex fold up bike and other bike.

  • Provide smarter driving training for essential users.

  • Work with Suffolk Coastal Services to help them develop their travel plan.
