Licensing Act 2003 - applying for a personal licence

SpeakerListen to the text on this page

A personal licence will allow an individual to authorise the sale or supply of alcohol under the Licensing Act 2003.

Anyone who wants a personal licence has to pass a test covering licensing issues, and will be subject to a check for previous criminal convictions.

The personal licence lasts for ten years (unless it is suspended, surrendered or forfeited), costs £37, and can move with its holder from licensed premises to licensed premises anywhere in England and Wales.

Guidance for applicants

Our Licensing Team has produced an information pack for applicants which you can view or download by following the link below:

Application forms in PDF and Word formats (new window) are available from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport website.

Important - This authority is under a duty to protect the public funds it administers, and to this end may use the information you have provided on this form for the prevention and detection of fraud. It may also share this information with other bodies responsible for auditing or administering public funds for these purposes. Follow this link for more information about the national fraud initiative.

Please note that application forms in Word format can be filled in on your computer and printed off for submission but completed forms must be signed and submitted to us as hard copy.

If you want to fill in your application by hand, print out either a PDF or Word version and complete it using black ink and block capitals. This is important because the form will be scanned.

Follow this link for help with downloading and opening Word and PDF documents.
