Appraisal of the Aldeburgh and Woodbridge conservation
areas
Suffolk Coastal’s policy, design and conservation team want your
help to appraise the Aldeburgh and Woodbridge conservation areas to
evaluate and record the special interest of the areas.
A conservation area is an area of special architectural or
historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is
desirable to preserve or enhance. They are a unique form of
conservation because they will not only protect buildings,
including those that are unlisted buildings, but also open spaces,
trees and special features that make an area locally
distinctive.
Compared with other areas of legislation, it is thought that,
along with the Green Belt, conservation areas are one of the most
popular and successful examples of planning in practice. There are
33 conservation areas in the Suffolk Coastal district.
The team would like to receive
ideas and comments on what the local community regard as the
issues facing these conservation areas and how they may be
addressed. We are also interested to find out local views on
what features are more or less important within the area and
how change may be directed in the future.
A review of boundaries will be undertaken separately at a later
date but suggestions can be noted in the meantime.
The appraisal will be drafted later this year when the Council
will undertake a formal consultation process that will include town
councils, community groups and anyone else who has contacted us on
this topic.

Eight more conservation areas to be appraised
We have also started the appraisal of a further eight
conservation areas, in addition to the
appraisal underway for Aldeburgh and Woodbridge.
These are in the parishes of Earl Soham, Grundisburgh,
Melton, Orford, Peasenhall, Thorpeness, Westleton and Yoxford.
As with Aldeburgh and Woodbridge, the purpose of the appraisal
is to evaluate and record the special interest of the areas, a
process in which it is essential to involve the local
community.
Again, we would greatly appreciate hearing your ideas and
comments on what you regard as the issues facing the conservation
areas, and how these might be addressed. We are also interested to
find out local views on what features are regarded as more or less
important within the areas and how change may be directed in the
future.
Please note that a review of boundaries will be undertaken
separately at a later date but that suggestions can be noted in the
meantime.
The appraisal will be drafted by March 2009 when we shall
undertake a formal consultation. If you have any queries in the
meantime, please feel free to contact Robert Scrimgeour, Senior
Design and Conservation Officer on 01394 444616 or
email
robert.scrimgeour@suffolkcoastal.gov.uk.
