Planning policy

The planning system plays an important role in our society by helping to protect our built and natural environment. In this section you will find planning guidance and policy documents and links to other related sites which further explain the planning system and the changes being introduced.

Copies of most planning policy documents can be downloaded or purchased from our publications list (new window PDF 27KB). Documents can also be viewed during office hours at our Melton Hill offices in Woodbridge and public libraries in the district.

Suffolk Coastal Local Development Framework.
Local Plans are being replaced by Local Development Frameworks following changes to the planning system introduced by the Government. Find out about the new framework which will be a ‘route map’ for the development of the district over the next 15 years, and beyond.

Suffolk Coastal Local Plan.
The Local Plan sets out the Council's policies and proposals for the development and use of land within the district and includes detailed policies to guide planning decisions.

Review of policies on affordable housing.
Suffolk Coastal reviewed the policies in its Local Plan which deal specifically with affordable housing in advance of the production of the Suffolk Coastal Local Development Framework.

Supplementary Planning Guidance.
List of Supplementary Planning Guidance (SPG) documents with links to downloadable versions.

Suffolk design guides.
Information about the good practice and design guides for development produced by the Suffolk local authorities.

Conservation areas.
Information about the conservation areas within the district and a guide to the legislation that protects them.

Listed buildings.
Listed buildings are protected to ensure that they are properly protected from neglect, inappropriate alteration, extension or demolition. Includes information about making an application for listing and listed building consent.

Felixstowe Master Plan.
The Felixstowe & Trimleys Peninsula Future Steering Group, in conjunction with David Lock Associates, has completed a significant stage in the development of an overall regeneration master plan for Felixstowe.

A local strategy for Felixstowe.
Report published in April 2006 setting out a vision of the possible future for the Felixstowe Peninsular and the challenges it faces.

Woodbridge Riverside Planning Brief.
Explains how Suffolk Coastal expects the policies of the Local Plan to be implemented specifically in the Woodbridge Riverside area.
