Suffolk Design Guide for Residential Areas
The Suffolk Design Guide for Residential Areas was adopted as
supplementary planning guidance by all the
Suffolk local planning authorities in 1993 and was revised in 2000
to acknowledge changes in planning policy guidance.
The guide sets the out principles and guidelines which should be
adopted by all those involved in the development of housing areas
whether they be developers, housebuilders, local planning
authorities or utility companies.

The Suffolk local planning authorities are reviewing the role of
the Suffolk Design Guide following the
Government's publication of
its Manual for Streets (new window).
It is anticipated that Manual for Streets will be supplemented
in Suffolk by some additional highway guidance and some design
guidance to reflect the distinctive character of Suffolk. Work is
progressing on these supplements with consultation likely to
commence at the end of 2009.
The Suffolk Manual
The Suffolk Manual has also been produced jointly by the Suffolk
local authorities and is a good practice guide for highway works
and other public spaces in sensitive areas. It is made up of
several parts:
- Suffolk Manual - Suffolk County Council's
agreed environmental policy relating to the design of highway
works.
- Suffolk Conservation Manual - good practice
guide for highway works in conservation areas.
- Suffolk Countryside Manual - good practice
guide for highway works in the wider countryside as well as those
parts of towns and villages which retain a rural character.
- Suffolk Surface Dressing Manual - gives advice
on the use of surface dressing in highway schemes in sensitive
areas.
- Suffolk Materials Manual - gives guidance on
the choice and laying of materials commonly used in enhancement
works in conservation and other sensitive areas.

Suffolk Advisory Parking Standards
The Suffolk Advisory Parking Standards were adopted by the
Suffolk local planning authorities as
supplementary planning guidance in 2002. The
standards relate to car and cycle parking and provide policy advice
to those considering planning applications for new development and
set out advisory levels of parking for particular types of
scheme.
