The Suffolk Coastal district is recognised internationally for its nature conservation interest. Many sites throughout the district, particularly in the coastal area, have been designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) under provisions in the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (new window).

Further information about SSSI's (new window) and other conservation designations can be found on the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) website.

There are also over 200 sites in Suffolk Coastal district of local importance for nature conservation and these are known as County Wildlife Sites (new window). The Suffolk Coastal Local Plan includes policies to ensure that wildlife interests are taken into account when considering planning proposals which affect these and other sites.
