The Suffolk Coastal Local Plan sets out the Council's policies and
proposals for the development and use of land within the district
and includes detailed policies to guide planning decisions.
It consists of 263 specific planning policies (prefixed AP)
which sum up key parts of the Local Plan.
The Council is in the process of replacing the adopted Suffolk
Coastal Local Plan with the new
Suffolk Coastal Local Development Framework
(LDF).
The Suffolk Coastal Local Plan was adopted by the Council in
1994 and subject to a First Alteration which was adopted in 2001. A
Second Alteration, dealing specifically with affordable housing,
came into effect on 31 March 2006.
Additional information and guidance is available in the
Council's Supplementary Planning Guidance documents.
LDF Core Strategy
Suffolk Coastal's LDF Core Strategy has progressed to the next
stage in the statutory process and has now been submitted to the
Secretary of the State for Examination by an independent Planning
Inspector.
The Core Strategy and the policies it contains are now a
'material consideration' to be taken into account when considering
planning applications. They do not replace the 'saved policies'
from the Suffolk Coastal Local Plan but sit alongside them and the
other documents which form the Development Plan.
Suffolk Coastal Local Plan 'saved' policies
In order to ensure continuing planning policy coverage during
the transition from the adopted Suffolk Coastal Local Plan to the
new Suffolk Coastal Local Development Framework, the Council
applied to the Secretary of State (GO-East) to 'save' the majority
of policies contained in the Suffolk Coastal Local Plan
Incorporating First Alterations until such time as the new
Local Development Framework is adopted.
The affordable housing policies included in the Suffolk Coastal
Local Plan Second Alteration were automatically 'saved' having only
been adopted in March 2006.
Confirmation was received from the Secretary of State in the
form of a 'DIRECTION UNDER PARAGRAPH 1(3) OF SCHEDULE 8 TO THE
PLANNING AND COMPULSORY PURCHASE ACT 2004 POLICIES CONTAINED IN
SUFFOLK COASTAL LOCAL PLAN INCORPORATING THE FIRST ALTERATION
2001'.
Those policies not listed in the direction expired on 27
September 2007.
Second Alteration to the Local Plan - March 2006
Suffolk Coastal reviewed the policies which deal specifically
with
affordable housing in advance of the
production of the Suffolk Coastal Local Development Framework.
The revised policies have been incorporated into the Local Plan
as a Second Alteration and came into effect on 31 March
2006.
The Second Alteration concentrates on the subject of affordable
housing and changes have only been made to policies AP37 and AP38.
These have been replaced with policies AP37A and AP38A. Also
replaced are paragraphs 3.49 to 3.57 as seen in the First
Alteration. You can view the replacement text and policies by
following the link below. No changes have been made to any of the
proposals maps.
The Local Plan can also be viewed during office hours at our
Melton Hill offices in Woodbridge and public libraries in the
district and is available to purchase from the
Planning
Helpdesk.
