The Government’s Regional Spatial
Strategy, also called the
East of England Plan (new window),
identifies a minimum requirement for new housing in Suffolk
Coastal, and the east of Ipswich specifically.
The Core Strategy Preferred Options document sets out how and
where these new homes will be distributed across the district, with
a strategy for each town to govern its future growth.
The need for new homes has also been identified in the Council’s
Housing Needs Survey, and in the
David Lock Report, which, while it
specifically dealt with Felixstowe area, clearly spelt out the
need for additional homes even for the same size of population,
as social changes mean that the average number of people in a
household is reducing all the time.
Further consultation on housing distribution
To comply with Government policy, the total requirement for new
homes in the district between 2008 and 2025 is 7,710.
Following the public consultation on the Preferred Options
document some parts of the Core Strategy were updated. The
number of new homes required in the district by 2025 remained at
7,710, but changes were made to where these are expected
to be built.
In July 2009 Suffolk Coastal’s Cabinet agreed that the updated
housing distribution should be the subject of further public
consultation. The consultation period ran from 23 September
2009 until 18 November 2009.
