Site Specific Allocations Issues and Options consultation

Suffolk Coastal Local Development Framework logoSubmitted sites consultation

The Site Specific Allocations Issues and Options document identifies all the sites which landowners, developers and others have submitted to the Council as part of Local Development Framework process for consideration to be allocated for future development.

We consulted on the document between 8 December 2008 and 20 February 2009 to find out which of the sites submitted would best meet the future long term needs of the district, and those which should not be developed.

Please note that the sites contained in the document are not sites that the Council is proposing for development - no work has been done on assessing or prioritising them for their suitability as sites for future development. The Council has neither endorsed or rejected any of these sites at this stage.

What's in the document?

Basic information is provided in relation to each site - for example, whether it is a greenfield site, whether it is important for nature conservation, subject to flood risk and so on.

Core Strategy Preferred Options front coverSites are also shown grouped for each town or parish with the proposed 'settlement classification' for that location. The classification indicates where the settlement fits in the 'settlement hierarchy' proposed in the Core Strategy, which determines where development may occur and at what scale. The types of settlement classification are:

  • Major centre.
  • Town.
  • Key service centre.
  • Local service centre.
  • Other villages.
  • Countryside.

You can view the sites by individual town or parish or you can download the documents containing the sites in the north and south areas of the district by following the links in the document downloads section below.

Physical limits boundaries

We also invited comments on what criteria should be used when deciding where to draw the physical limits boundaries, or ‘envelopes’, of those settlements where new development will be directed. This is the boundary within which development would normally be allowed, but outside of which development would be strictly limited.

To assist with this, we suggested some criteria that could be used to identify where the boundary should be drawn, in order to ensure there is consistency across the district and to allow for flexibility and growth where appropriate.

Issues and Options text document (new window PDF 905KB) - gives an introduction and background to the Site Specific Allocations and Policies document, explains how submitted sites will be assessed and includes details of the proposed 'settlement hierarchy'.

Sites in the north and south areas of the district have been split into two parts enable us to publish them on the website:

Please note that these are quite large files. We recommend that you download them rather than view them in your web browser. Follow this link for help with downloading and opening PDF files.

What happens next?

The final Site Specific Allocations & Policies document will include other site specific information and policies in addition to potential sites for development and physical limits boundaries proposals set out in the Issues and Options document.
