Suffolk Coastal's beaches

Suffolk Coastal has fine beaches that have won awards for cleanliness and good management along its coastline at Felixstowe, Aldeburgh, Thorpeness and Sizewell.

Blue Flag beach at Felixstowe South

For the 2008 season, the main resort beach at Felixstowe South was awarded a Blue Flag for the ninth consecutive year.

The award coincided with parts of the beach being temporarily closed while a £10million coastal defence scheme was underway. This work will guarantee an even better beach for future years, with new groynes keeping the sand where it should be.

Blue Flag logoThe Blue Flag Campaign is an international campaign, administered by ENCAMS (new window) in England, that aims to promote the care of our coastal environment and recognises quality resort beaches and marinas worldwide.

To win the Blue Flag, Felixstowe South beach had to satisfy requirements for dog control, supervision and first aid facilities during peak hours and the provision of parking and toilets for disabled visitors.

From May to September, Suffolk Coastal's Resort Assistants, based at the Tourist Information Centre, patrol the Blue Flag beach to ensure that it is up to standard by ensuring no dogs are on the beach and no motorised craft are within the swimming zone.

Their other duties include checking for vandalism such as damage to the beach huts, toilets and chalets and that nothing harmful is being washed ashore. They assist in resort events, keep a look out for craft on the water and generally keep an eye on things within the resort.
