Council Tax - disabled persons reduction

SpeakerListen to the text on this page

Your Council Tax bill may be reduced by the equivalent of one band if your home has certain features which are essential or of major importance to the well being of a disabled person who lives in there.

These features are:

  • A room (other than a bathroom, kitchen or toilet) mainly used by the disabled person which is required for meeting their needs (a room used for the storage of dialysis equipment for example).

  • A second bathroom or kitchen which is required for meeting their needs.

  • Sufficient floorspace to permit the use of a wheelchair.

In order to qualify your home must have at least one of these features. In considering your application we have to decide if the disabled person would find it impossible or extremely difficult to live at the property, or their health would suffer, or the disability become more severe, if the feature were not present in the property.

Applying for a reduction

If you wish to apply for this reduction please call us on 01394 444855 or email council.tax@suffolkcoastal.gov.uk for an application form or complete our online application form. If you are hearing impaired and have a minicom device you can call us on 01394 444211.

If we decide that you are not entitled to a reduction and you believe that you are, you have the right of appeal. Firstly, you must write to us stating the reasons why you think you are entitled to the reduction. We have two months in which to consider your representations and advise you of our decision. If you still disagree with our decision you then have the right to appeal to the Valuation Tribunal. In the meantime you should continue to pay your bill.
