Help for Homeless 16 and 17 year olds
Young people aged 16 and 17 who are either street homeless or
being asked to leave accommodation they have no legal right to
occupy, and who are not the responsibility of social care services,
can claim help with housing because they are considered to be
‘priority need’ due to their age.
This leaflet and webpage explain what help is available and
what the Council will do to help.

Housing advice for partners in a relationship breakdown
When a relationship is breaking
down, whether married or living as a couple, it is important
to get housing advice from the Council, a solicitor, or an
advice centre as decisions taken at this time about whether or
not to leave could have long term consequences.
This leaflet covers issues such as rights, what to do in the
case of violence or becoming homeless, care of children, and
benefits and mortgage advice.

Are you in arrears with your rent or mortgage?
Many people can find it difficult to pay the rent or mortgage on
their home. It might be because of illness, unemployment or because
of a relationship break-up. It is really important to take action
early on, before the problem becomes bigger.
This leaflet gives advice on what to do and who to get in touch
with for further advice.

Mediation for homeless applicants
Being made homeless from parents, relatives or friends accounts
for the majority of housing applications. For some housing
applicants it is not possible to remain at home due to fear,
violence or abuse. However, for many others, the security provided
by home will enable them to plan their future accommodation needs.
Mediation is part of the Council's assessment of a housing
application and is designed to resolve the practical difficulties
between applicants and householders. This leaflet explains how
mediation can help and how it works.
