What are community personal alarms?

Personal alarm services can benefit can benefit vulnerable people of any age including:

  • Older people.
  • People suffering from a physical disability or mental health problems.
  • Individuals at risk from harassment or domestic violence.
  • Lone workers.

Generally, the services enable them to get help 24 hours a day by pressing a button which connects them to a help centre, via their telephone line, who will then find out what kind of help they need and act appropriately.

What is telecare?

Telecare consists of assistive technology and services that support the safety and independence of people in their own homes. The equipment can sense risks such as smoke, floods and gas, can remind them to take their pills and even call for help if they fall. A help centre can be contacted automatically if any of these problems occur in their home.

If needed the help centre can arrange for someone to come to their home or can contact their family, a doctor or the emergency services.
