Suffolk Coastal is required to provide emergency shelter for homeless people who are in priority need. In general terms this includes families with school age children; pregnant women; people with a disability (including those suffering with mental ill health); and those people above state pensionable age.

You are classed as homeless if any of the following apply:

  • You have no accommodation available in the UK or elsewhere.
  • Your family has no home where you can live together.
  • You have a home but you cannot get in.
  • You have a home but it is considered unreasonable for you to live there.

If you are homeless and need help with accommodation, contact the Housing Options Team on 01394 444237 or email homelessness@suffolkcoastal.gov.uk

If you need help outside of office hours telephone 07771 816545 and speak to the operator who will contact a duty officer.

Suffolk Coastal also operates a rent deposit guarantee scheme for single people and couples without children and the Coastal Lettings Plus scheme for families on a low income. Both schemes provide people the opportunity to move into the home of their choice and to avoid homelessness and a lengthy stay in temporary accommodation.

We have produced a range of leaflets giving advice on housing related matters such as dealing with rent or mortgage arrears, coping with debt, relationship breakdowns and mediation for homeless applicants.
