Wheeled bin recycling and refuse collection service

Recycle for Suffolk Coastal logoIn 2006 we launched a new improved recycling service for 9,000 homes in the district, giving people the chance to have their cardboard, plastics, foil and cans collected every fortnight.

9,500 more homes received the service in 2007 and another 17,500 will have it by the end of October 2008 bringing the total to around 36,000, or roughly two-thirds of the homes in the district. We plan to roll out this service to every home by March 2010.

Blue lidded and grey binsThese homes now have two wheeled bins in addition to their brown bin for green and food waste. The blue lidded bin is for recyclable materials, and the all grey bin is for household refuse that cannot currently be recycled.

The all grey bins are emptied one week, and the following week the recycling teams empty the blue lidded bins and the brown bins. All homes in the scheme will get a calendar telling them which weeks to put out their different coloured bins.

For these homes, and these homes only, the green crates for paper will no longer be emptied as all waste paper, catalogues and other paper products should now go in the blue lidded bin. The green crates can be useful for storing glass bottles and jars before they are taken to a local recycling site.

Homes getting the new service will no longer be able to put out black sacks - their non-recyclable rubbish should go in the all grey waste bins that will be emptied every fortnight. Green sacks with garden waste will also no longer be collected in areas that have wheeled bins.

Like our other household refuse collection services, this new service will operate as normal on bank holidays, except during the Christmas and New Year holiday period.

When will I get the new service?

We plan to roll out this service to every home in the district by March 2010. Follow this link to see a map showing our proposed introduction timetable (new window PDF 42KB). Please note that the boundaries shown on the map are parish boundaries and do not necessarily show precisely the areas planned to receive the service at the time indicated.

Information will be sent to each household before the service starts in that area and you will be given the chance to go along to a local roadshow to see the new bins and ask any questions. Details will be published here nearer the time.
