Wheeled bin recycling and refuse collection service

SpeakerListen to the text on this page

Recycle for Suffolk Coastal logoIn 2006 we launched a new wheeled bin recycling and refuse collection service, giving people alternate fortnightly collections of recyclable materials and household refuse that cannot be recycled.

Most households in the district now receive the new service - the roll out will be completed in March this year, when the remaining 5,000 or so homes will receive it.

The new blue and grey lidded binsHomes getting the new service have two wheeled bins in addition to their brown bin for garden and food waste. The blue lidded bin is for recyclable materials, and the grey lidded bin is for household refuse that cannot currently be recycled.

The grey lidded bins are emptied one week, and the blue lidded bins and the brown bins the following week. All homes in the scheme will get a refuse and recycling calendar telling them which weeks to put out their different bins.

Homes in the scheme will no longer have their green crates for paper emptied as all waste paper, catalogues and other paper products should now go in the blue lidded bin. The green crates can be useful for storing glass bottles and jars before they are taken to a local recycling site.

Homes getting the new service will no longer be able to put out black sacks - their non-recyclable rubbish should go in the grey lidded waste bins that will be emptied every fortnight. Green sacks with garden waste will also no longer be collected.

When to put out your bins

Your blue lidded and brown bins should be put out for emptying on your collection day in each recycling week shown on the refuse and recycling calendar. The grey lidded bin should be put out on your collection day during each non-recycling week shown on the calendar.

The bins should be out ready for emptying at 7.30am as collections start early. Please note that the time of collection may change at any time, so to avoid missing the collection, always put your bin out by 7.30am.

If you are not sure of your collection day, or haven't received a calendar, or have lost your copy, you can look up your next collection day and download a calendar by following the link below:

Alternatively, call Suffolk Coastal Services on 01394 444000 or email scsltd@suffolkcoastal.gov.uk and they will confirm your collection day or send you a new calendar.

Our waste collection services operate as normal on bank holidays, except during the Christmas and New Year holiday period.
