Wheeled bin recycling service

SpeakerListen to the text on this page

Recycle for Suffolk Coastal logoIn 2006 a new improved recycling service was launched for over 9,000 homes in the district, giving people the chance to have their cardboard, plastics, foil and cans collected every fortnight. 9,500 more homes received the new service in 2007 and another 18,400 will have it by the end of October 2008 bringing the total to just under 37,000, or roughly two-thirds of the district.

Residents are currently recycling a record 45 per cent of their household waste, and those with the improved service have been hitting 54 per cent.

These homes now have two special wheeled bins. One of Blue lidded and grey binsthe bins is grey with a blue lid for the new recycling service, and the other is all grey and is for waste that cannot currently be recycled.

The all grey bin will be emptied one week, and the following week the recycling teams will empty the blue lidded bin and the brown bin for green waste.

For these homes, and these homes only, the green crates for paper will no longer be emptied as all waste paper, catalogues and other paper products should now go in the blue-lidded bin. The green crates can be useful for storing glass bottles and jars before they are taken to a local recycling site.

Homes getting the new service will no longer be able to put out black sacks - their non-recyclable rubbish will go in the all grey waste bins that will be emptied every fortnight.

When will I get the new service?

This April another 6,000 homes in the district received the new wheeled bin service. Two further expansions of the service will commence in July and October this year. Each home included in the roll out of the new service will receive information on how and when to use the service.

Nearly 5,000 households will receive the new service in the July expansion which includes Alderton, Bawdsey, Campsea Ashe, Chediston, Cratfield, Culpho, Eyke, Farnham, Great Bealings, Heveningham, Huntingfield, Linstead, Little Glemham, Stratford St Andrew, Swilland, Tuddenham St Martin, Walpole, Westerfield, Witnesham, Ubbeston and parts of Hollesley, Kelsale, Leiston, Martlesham, Saxmundham and Trimley St Martin.

The new service for these areas starts week commencing 14 July - grey bins are emptied that week, brown and blue-lidded bins are emptied the week after that.

A special helpline is available to deal with any questions about the new service - just call 01394 444050.

We plan to roll out this service to every home in the district by the end of 2010, although we will continue to bid for funding from the Government in order to speed up introduction.

Follow this link to see a map showing our proposed introduction timetable (new window PDF 42KB). Please note that the boundaries shown on the map are parish boundaries and do not necessarily show precisely the areas planned to receive the service at the time indicated. Information will be sent to each household before the service starts in that area.
