Disposing of bulky household items

Digital TV switchover - do I need a new TV?

The switchover from analogue to digital TV in the Anglia TV region took place in July 2011 (for south Suffolk) and November 2011 (for north Suffolk). This doesn’t mean that you will have to get rid of your old set as almost any TV can be converted with a digital box, so there is no need to buy a new TV unless you want to.

However, if you do choose to upgrade your TV, try to choose an energy efficient one and dispose of your old one in a responsible way. You can ask the supplier delivering your new TV if they have a service for taking the old one away or you can use one of the other options for disposing of your old TV given below.

Disposing of items in usable condition

Before disposing of items such as furniture and household appliances that are in usable condition, consider whether you could offer them to friends or family, or to a charity shop.

Alternatively, why not try Freecycle or Freegle to recycle your unwanted items? Both are online groups for matching people who are giving and receiving free unwanted items in their local communities. Follow this link to find Freecycle groups (new window) and Freegle groups (new window) in Suffolk.

There are two community-run furniture projects locally, which are charitable organisations that arrange for the reuse of unwanted furniture and other household items:

Ipswich Furniture Project
Hogarth Road, Ipswich IP3 0EY.
Telephone: 01473 404004 (for reusable items), 01473 408005 (for scrap appliances and metal items).
Email: ipswichfp@aol.com

Framlingham Furniture Project
10a Riverside, Framlingham IP13 9AH.
Telephone: 01728 621210
Email: framvc@btconnect.com

Donating unwanted items to St Elizabeth Hospice

St Elizabeth Hospice St Elizabeth Hospice has eleven shops throughout East Suffolk. Donated goods can be taken directly to their distribution centre in Ipswich or the Hospice may be able to collect from your home.

The Hospice will collect furniture donations, for free, six days a week. If you have any furniture that you would like to donate, call 01473 744080 (Monday to Saturday, 9.00am - 4.30pm) to discuss collection.
