Black sack refuse collection service

SpeakerListen to the text on this page

Roughly two-thirds of homes in the district now receive a new wheeled bin recycling and refuse collection service and have alternate fortnightly collections of recyclable materials and household refuse. We plan to roll out this service to every home in the district by 2010.

For households that do not yet have the new wheeled bin collection service, we operate a weekly boundary collection of household refuse in black sacks. Your refuse will be collected on the same day each week though the exact time may vary depending on workload and traffic.

The service operates as normal on bank holidays, except during the Christmas and New Year holiday period.

If you are not sure of your collection day call Suffolk Coastal Services on 01394 444000 or email scsltd@suffolkcoastal.gov.uk and they will confirm it for you.

Your green waste and paper waste is collected fortnightly from your brown wheeled bin and green paper recycling crate on your usual collection day during the recycling weeks highlighted on the recycling calendar. If you haven't got a calendar, call Suffolk Coastal Services on 01394 444000 or email scsltd@suffolkcoastal.gov.uk and they will send you one.

Black refuse sacks

Black refuse sacks for the boundary collection service will be delivered to your home every 6 months. Each delivery consists of 26 sacks. Householders may provide themselves with additional sacks if required. Any number of refuse sacks containing household waste will be collected. Additional supplies of black sacks and green sacks for light garden waste are available to purchase.

Green garden waste sacks

You can put these green sacks out for collection alongside your black refuse sacks but unfortunately the content has to be sent to landfill. The green sack service is no longer available to any home which has the new wheeled bin recycling and refuse collection service. Green sacks are available to purchase and cost £7 for a bundle of 15 sacks.

Please keep all plastic sacks away from small children and store sacks in a safe place.

How you can help ...

Play your part in keeping your area clean, green and tidy by keeping your black sacks where animals cannot get to them (use a dustbin if you have one) and don't put your sacks out any earlier than 4.30pm on the day before the scheduled day of collection.

Always ...

  • Put your sacks out by 7.30am on collection days.

  • Make sure your sacks are securely tied, thus avoiding spillage of litter.

  • Ensure the orange cord provided for tying the sacks is placed within the black sack if you do not use it so that it doesn't become a hazard to wildlife.

  • Wrap all sharp objects well, including bottles and jars (preferably put these in bottle banks) or lightbulbs, whether they are broken or not, before placing them in sacks, thus avoiding injury to yourself or collectors.

  • Recycle as much of your waste as possible.

Do not ...

  • Put your sacks out any earlier than 4.30pm on the day before the scheduled day of collection..

  • Put garden waste in with your domestic waste.

  • Put hot ashes in the black sacks.

  • Put liquid paint or any other liquid waste in the black sacks.

  • Put waste from a business in the black sacks.

Remember ...

  • You can place any food waste, wrapped in cardboard, newspaper or compostable bags, in your brown bin for composting.

  • The collection point for your sacks is just inside the boundary of your property, next to the footway.

If your refuse wasn't picked up when it should have been ...

If you put your refuse out on time and in the right place, but we didn't pick it up, we will come back and clear what was missed.

To make sure that your refuse is picked up each week you need to:

  • Put your sacks out by 7.30am on collection days.

  • Put it out at the collection point.

  • Make sure you only put out domestic waste in black sacks (not trade waste or garden waste).

If you did all of the above and your refuse still wasn't picked up, then we apologise for the mistake. Please contact Suffolk Coastal Services on 01394 444000 and they will send someone to pick up the refuse that was missed. You can also email scsltd@suffolkcoastal.gov.uk.
