Household refuse collection

SpeakerListen to the text on this page

Suffolk Coastal currently operates a weekly boundary sack method of refuse collection for most homes in the district. Household refuse will be collected on the same day each week though the exact time may vary depending on workload and traffic.

Your green waste is collected fortnightly using brown wheeled bins. Paper waste is collected fortnightly using green crates.

An increasing number of homes in the district now receive a new wheeled bin recycling service and have alternate fortnightly collections of recyclable materials and household refuse that cannot be recycled. The Council plans to roll out this service to every home in the district by the end of 2010.

Refuse sacks

Black refuse sacks for the boundary collection service will be delivered to your home every 26 weeks. Each delivery will consist of 26 sacks. Householders may provide themselves with additional sacks if required. Any number of refuse sacks containing household waste will be collected. Additional supplies of black sacks and green sacks for light garden waste are available. Follow this link to find out how to order refuse sacks.

Suffolk Coastal garden waste sacks

You can put these green sacks out for collection alongside your black refuse sacks but unfortunately the content has to be sent to landfill as it cannot be recycled. The green sack service is no longer available to any home which has the new wheeled bin recycling service. The sacks cost £7 for a bundle of 15 sacks and you can get them from:

  • Our refuse collectors
  • Our offices at Melton Hill, Woodbridge and our Ufford Depot
  • Aldeburgh Tourist Information Centre
  • Town council offices at Kesgrave, Leiston and Woodbridge
  • Framlingham Volunteer Centre
  • Martlesham Post Office

Please keep all plastic sacks away from small children and store sacks in a safe place.

Please help us by following these simple rules ...

Always

  • Put your refuse out by 7.30am on collection days.
  • Make sure your sacks are securely tied, thus avoiding spillage of litter.
  • Wrap all sharp objects, including bottles and jars (broken or not), well before placing in sacks, thus avoiding injury to yourself or collectors - preferably use the bottle banks.
  • Recycle as much of your waste as possible.

Never

  • Put your refuse out prior to collection day.
  • Put garden waste in with your domestic waste.
  • Put hot ashes in the sacks.

Remember

  • The collection point for your refuse is just inside the boundary of your property, next to the footway.

If we didn't pick up your refuse when we should have

If you put your refuse out on time, at the right place but we didn't pick it up then we will come back and clear what we missed.

To make sure that we pick up your refuse each week you need to:

  • put it out by 7.30am
  • put it out at the boundary where your property meets the public highway
  • make sure you only put out domestic waste in black sacks (not trade waste or garden waste)

If you did all of the above but we still didn't pick up your refuse then we apologise for our mistake. Please let us put it right by contacting us on 01394 444000 and we will send someone to pick up the refuse we missed.  You can also email us at scsltd@suffolkcoastal.gov.uk

Bank holiday collections

The refuse collection service operates as normal on bank holidays, except during the Christmas and New Year holiday period.
