Wash 'em and squash 'em
Paper-based cartons used to hold food and drink products such as
milk, fruit juices and beverages, wine, soups and desserts, such as
Tetra Paks, which are made of aluminium and plastic as well as
cardboard, can be recycled by washing them, squashing them and
taking them to special collection points at locations around the
district.
There are special containers for these types of carton at:
- Foxhall, Leiston and Felixstowe
household waste recycling centres (new
window).
- Framlingham Sports Club, Badingham Road.
- Orford, Quay Street car park.
- Wickham Market Village Hall.
- Woodbridge - at the recycling site in the car
park behind Woodbridge Community Centre, Station Road.
- Yoxford Village Hall.
Please remember that these special containers are only for
paper-based food and drinks cartons, and not for any other items
such as plastic bottles. Plastic bottles can either be recycled
in your blue lidded wheeled bin or placed in the
separate containers for plastic recycling at the
household waste recycling centres (new
window).
You cannot put paper-based food and drinks cartons in your
blue lidded bin because they are made from mixed materials and
must be processed separately when recycled.
It is estimated that there are almost 58,000 tonnes of cartons
are left to be disposed of in the UK every year and because they
are made from layered material they are a difficult product to
recycle.
Recycling the cartons involves soaking them in water and mashing
them to separate the cardboard from its plastic and aluminium
lining. The cardboard is made into paper bags and envelopes and the
leftover plastic and aluminium mix can be used in furniture or to
generate energy.
The carton recycling scheme has been set up with help from ACE UK
(the Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment) who
represent major carton manufacturers.
