Scheme helps older people get free loft insulation

24 Aug 2010

Archived press release.

Even more residents could enjoy a cosy winter thanks to a scheme that is helping older and more vulnerable people take up the opportunity of having free loft insulation.

Four people have already benefitted from the Suffolk Coastal Local Strategic Partnership (LSP) backed scheme run by Suffolk Coastal to help clear older and more vulnerable peoples’ lofts so they can have free loft insulation.

“We realised that some older or more vulnerable people who are eligible for the loft insulation scheme cannot take advantage of it because they cannot get into their lofts to clear them out. Our initiative is helping residents move and sort through their belongings so the insulation can be installed,” said Cllr Chris Slemmings, Cabinet Member for Housing.

“There is still some money available so it is not too late for residents to contact us and get help. I would encourage anyone who may be eligible to call us now to make sure they do not miss out on the help on offer which, because of the limited funds, is on a first come, first served basis.

“By properly insulating their home residents will see the benefits immediately saving money on their energy bills. Fuel costs are a major part of anyone’s budget and any steps that can be taken to make homes more energy efficient and cut our residents’ bills has to be welcomed,” added Cllr Slemmings.

Residents who receive state benefits or are over the age of 70 may be eligible for free loft and cavity wall insulation and may also be able to benefit from the loft clearing pilot scheme.

Suffolk Coastal will arrange the insulation process will arrange the insulation work and the contractors to carry it out.  Suffolk Coastal can also arrange help with sorting through possessions while helping residents to clear loft space. The Council can contact Age Concern who will then arrange a reliable and trusted contractor to help with the sorting and clearing process, and disposing of anything residents no longer wish to keep.

Residents can find out if they are eligible for free insulation by calling the Carbon Reduction Initiative (Cri) on 0800 232 1677.
