Why not join us on our health walks?

Improve your health by joining us on our walks. Health walks are free and for everyone but especially those who may be recovering from illness or need to improve their exercise levels.

Walks can last for half to one and a half hours and they are informal and sociable. You walk with trained leaders and at your own pace. Sensible footwear is recommended.

Children are very welcome when accompanied by a responsible adult. Buggys and wheelchairs are welcome where stated.

Well behaved dogs are welcome on short leads unless otherwise stated.

You will find details of walks near you in the walks programme below. If you would like more information, or to be added to our mailing list for future copies of the Stepping Out walks programme, please contact the Walks Team on 01394 444501 or email walks@suffolkcoastal.gov.uk.

Walk programmes and courses

Our walk programme includes walks in Suffolk Coastal, Ipswich, Babergh, Forest Heath and West Suffolk areas:

Health walks grading system

Health walks are graded 1 to 5 to give you an indication of which ones are easy or a bit more challenging - a key to the grading system is given below:

  • Grade 1 - on easy flat good surfaces.
  • Grade 2 - mostly on the level but can be muddy in places.
  • Grade 3 - some moderate slopes but good surfaces.
  • Grade 4 - more challenging - may include steeper slopes, rough ground and mud in wet weather.
  • Grade 5 - as for grade 4 but may include one or two stiles.

Please complete a health questionnaire before you walk with us

The national Walking the Way to Health scheme requires us to ensure every person who comes on a health walk has completed a health questionnaire. This is for insurance purposes and to help each local scheme evaluate their health walks and show funders that they offer value for money.

To save time, if you have not completed this questionnaire or are walking with us for the first time, please could you print a copy off, complete and sign it, and give it to a walk leader on your next walk.

Local bus services and community transport

The websites listed below have comprehensive information about bus services and community transport in Suffolk - you may find them useful if you don't have access to your own transport:

Volunteer health walk leaders wanted

We are keen to expand the programme to many more areas in Suffolk but we need more volunteers to lead walks or act as back marker to make sure no one gets lost.

If you like walking, have a little bit of free time, like meeting people and want to be part of a supportive network then please come and join us. Free training and insurance is available to all walk leaders.
